Ukrainian Game Colorwood Words Hits #1 on the App Store in Ukraine

Colorwood Words, released in 2024, has taken the top spot among all free games on the Ukrainian App Store, surpassing even global hits. For the team, it’s a powerful signal from local players who appreciated the Ukrainian version of the game, and a strong example for other developers in Ukraine to create more games for and about Ukraine. One of the game’s standout features is its Ukrainian localization: everything from the interface and marketing campaign to a rich in-game dictionary filled with Ukrainian phrases and cultural facts. It promotes local culture through gameplay.

In the Ukrainian version, players decode iconic meme phrases, discover a borscht recipe from chef Yevhen Klopotenko, and even learn some rude phrases in Ukrainian. The bold marketing campaign embraced cultural symbols of recent years – from the infamous orgy on Shchekavytsia Hill to the «putin khuylo» slogan.

Colorwood Words is well-balanced: it features thoughtful design that calms rather than annoys, a fun assistant character named Nana Banana, and seven original ambient tracks that enhance the experience. Judging by the results and our #1 ranking, quality was the right direction», – says project producer Mariia Myronenko.

Colorwood Words is a cryptogram word puzzle game set in a cozy, wooden-themed world with enriching content. The goal is to decipher sentences by filling in the missing letters. The game features local memes, quotes from famous Ukrainians and Hollywood actors, historical facts, and popular song lyrics. 

It was developed in just 50 working days, and since launch, its retention rate has doubled. The team continues to update the game with fresh events, themed levels, and timely content. Each language version now has over 1000 levels, with the English one boasting more than 2000.
